English Version

This story begins with a husband and wife who had one son named Malin Kundang, who lived in a fisherman’s village in Pantai Air Manis, Padang. The family was very poor so that one day Malin Kundang’s father decided to go to another country to find a better job.

Malin Kundang was a smart and diligent child who had learned to work hard since a young age while retaining his playful childish mischief. When his father had left their home, his mother and Malin Kundang waited for him, from one month, 5 months to one year but his father never did return. Since then, Malin Kundang’s mother finally had to replace her husband’s position as breadwinner for both her son and herself. Malin Kundang also helped even though he could not contribute a lot as he was still a young child.

When Malin Kundang had grown up, he asked permission from his mother to be able to migrate to another country and try make a better living for them both. Initially, his mother did not give permission, as her husband also went for that same route and had never returned. But because of their poor financial situation, and Malin Kundang was very adamant, finally his mother reluctantly let Malin Kundang go to chase his dreams.

Malin Kundang hitched a boat from a wealthy merchant who had arrived at the waters where he lived. On the way, suddenly their ship was attacked by pirates. They cruelly took over the entire ship and even killed all the passengers of the ship. Malin Kundang was lucky as he was able to find a hiding place where the pirates could not find him. For a long time, Malin Kundang tried to survive living on a ship that was floating aimlessly in the sea. Until one day, the ship finally reached a beach. Malin Kundang painstakingly tried to walk into a village which he hoped to ask help from the locals. It turned out that the village in which he had been stranded was a very fertile and prosperous village. With Malin Kundang’s intelligence and perseverance, he succeeded in starting a new life, building a business that made him prosperous and owned quite a number of ships and employed many men who worked for him. Malin Kundang even married a beautiful girl from the village.

News of the timely success and marriage of Malin Kundang was heard by his mother who never gave up hope that her son would return to visit her. His mother prayed continuously that her hopes would come true and she would be able to see her son again. Since then, his mother went daily to the pier to wait for Malin Kundang to return.

Finally Malin Kundang’s mother’s prayers were answered as after the marriage, Malin Kundang and his wife went sailing accompanied by his men and bodyguards. Their ship reached the dock of the town where Malin Kundang’s mother lived. The ship was welcomed by many people who wanted to meet the handsome, rich couple and Malin Kundang’s mother tried to reach Malin Kundang who was surrounded by many people and his bodyguards. When his mother finally got close to Malin Kundang, his mother immediately hugged him long and hard, so happy that she could finally see her son again.

At that time, Malin Kundang’s wife was surprised to see the old woman hugging her husband, and was even more surprised after learning that the poor, shabbily-dressed old woman was Malin Kundang’s mother. His wife sneered and arrogantly said that this old woman was not worthy to be the mother of Malin Kundang who was rich, and Malin Kundang also once claimed that his mother was from the nobility. Malin Kundang felt cornered by the fact that his wife knew the true situation.Ashamed and angry he pushed his mother away from him and shouted that his mother was not a shabby and poor old woman. His mother could only sit and cry.

Malin Kundang’s mother returned broken-hearted to her house and prayed that should she had mistakenly recognized her son then he would be forgiven for his cruel actions. But if it was truly Malin Kundang, her own son, who had insulted and denied his own mother in front of all those people, then let there be a fair punishment in the life of Malin Kundang.

After the incident with his mother, Malin Kundang with his entourage, returned to the ship to continue his voyage. Not long after that, a storm suddenly swept by and hard rain with huge waves whipped at his ship. Lightning struck and his ship was destroyed and began to sink. The next day, the remains of a ship had turned into stone and there was a stone which had the form of a human being. This stone was the ungrateful Malin Kundang that was cursed by his mother and turned into stone. Small fish can be found swimming around those strew of stones and legend said that the fish are the remnants of Malin Kundang’s wife who searched continuously for her husband’s body.

Until now, at Pantai AIr Manis in Padang, people say that when big waves come crashing in against those stones near the beach, you can hear a human wailing voice crying out “Forgive me, mother…forgive me..”
