Kedua istri Resi Kasyapa masing-masing dikaruniai anak.  Kadru dikaruniai Naga, sedangkan Winata dikaruniai Burung Garuda.

English Version (5:20)

This story begins with a smart and wise ascetic who lived in a land on the island of Bali. The ascetic’s name was Kasyapa. He had two wives, whose names were Kadru and Winata. Kasyapa had always tried to be fair to both his wives but Kadru was always jealous and envious of Winata.

Each of Kasyapa’s wives was blessed with a child. Kadru’s child was the dragon Naga and Winata’s child was the bird Garuda. Because of her jealousy, Kadru had always had bad intentions towards Winata and looked for ways to expel Winata from the family circle of Kasyapa.

At one time, the Gods were churning the great oceans to obtain Tirta Amertha, the holy water that granted immortality to the person who could drink it, even if it was just a drop. At the same time of this event, appeared a flying horse named Ucaihswara. With the intention to harm Winata, Kadru challenged Winata to guess correctly the color of the horse Ucaihswara which they had not seen.

Winata accepted the challenge with the agreement that whoever lost would have to be willing to become the slave and obey all the commands of the winner. Then Kadru guessed that the horse was black in color and Winata guessed the color of the horse was white.

Before the horse appeared before them, secretly Kadru received information from her child, Naga, that the horse was actually white in color.

Knowing that she would lose, Kadru cunningly ordered her child to spray poison to the horse’s body so that it would appear black.

Due to the spray of poison, the originally white horse became black when it appeared and was seen by Kadru and Winata. Winata admitted defeat and agreed to be Kadru’s slave for the rest of her life.

Winata’s child, Garuda, who knew about Kadru’s cunning trickery, did not stay quiet. Garuda then battled with Kadru’s child, Naga, which continued without stopping day and night. Both of them remained equal in all of the battles until finally Naga gave a condition that he would free Winata if Garuda could bring Tirtha Amertha to Naga.

Garuda agreed to that condition, he was willing to find Tirtha Amertha which whereabouts were not known, so that he could save his mother from slavery. During his adventures, Garuda met the God Wisnu who was carrying the Tirtha Amertha. Garuda then asked for the Tirtha Amertha. Wisnu agreed to give the holy water with the condition that Garuda agreed to become the ride of Wisnu, which will later be known as Garuda Wisnu Kencana.

Garuda then successfully obtained Tirtha Amertha which was contained in a kamendalu (a water pot which was elliptical in shape) with ropes made of wild grass. He gave the holy water to Naga, but before Naga managed to drink the water, the God Indra who happened to pass by took it away. But there were drops of the Tirtha Amerta left on the wild grass rope. Naga then licked the rope which turned out to be very sharp, sharper than a knife. That was why Naga’s tongue split into 2 ends which caused all of the descendants of Naga to have split tongues.

The mother of Garuda, Winata, was then finally freed from slavery.
