English Version (2:20)

I lived with my parents from the time I was born till I was 18 years old. My parents’ house has three bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 rooms for the maid and 1 bathroom for the maid.

There are gardens and fences both at the back and the front of the house. On the left and right sides of the house, there is a garage and a small garden.

The house is white in colour and has many windows. In the morning, all windows are opened to their fullest; when the sun goes down, they are all closed.

If any of the trees in the garden bore fruit; such as the mango, coconut, rambutan and guava trees; then the harvest will be eaten together. Sometimes we also share with the neighbours around the house.

When I was 18 years old, I moved to America to continue my education. During school holidays, I returned home and sometimes that coincides with the fruit harvest.

One of the sweet memories every time I go home.

The meaning of a home is not just the physical aspect, but the memories tied to being at that place are what always makes me homesick.

These are our stories, what is yours?

Vocabularies.

Pembantu: maid – in a more formal way, people use ‘asisten rumah tangga’ instead of ‘pembantu (rumah tangga)’

Melanjutkan: continue

Bersamaan: coincides, at the same time

It’s common to hire helpers such as maids, nannies and drivers among middle up families.

Majority of the maid and nanny will be living with the families, while other helpers usually live in their own home.

In Indonesia, once you are 18, you are not expected to move out of the parents’ house, in fact, it’s a common practice that children live with their parents until they get married.

Indonesian language used here is in the daily-conversation format, that has influences from the local culture and custom. Should you have questions on the more formal version, please consult with your guru Bahasa Indonesia.
